Visiting New Zealand soon but want to continue working remotely while you’re here? Great news! New Zealand has updated its visa rules to welcome ‘digital nomads,’ allowing visitors to work remotely for overseas employers while exploring the country. Work Remotely, Stay Legally From 27 January 2025, visitors—including tourists, family visitors, and partners or guardians on longer-term visitor visas—can now work remotely for overseas employers or clients without breaching their visa conditions. This applies whether you’re on a standard Visitor Visa or traveling under an NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority). What You Can’t Do While you’re free to work remotely, there are some key restrictions: You cannot work for a New Zealand employer. You cannot provide goods or services to people or businesses in New Zealand. You cannot do work that requires you to be physically present at a workplace in New Zealand. Tax Considerations Tax rules for remote workers depend on your circumstances: If your income is taxed elsewhere and you stay in New Zealand less than 92 days in a 12-month period, New Zealand generally won’t tax you. If you’re from a country with which New Zealand has a tax treaty (including Australia, the UK, the US, most of Europe, and much of Asia), your exemption may extend to 183 days. Stay beyond these limits? You may be taxed from day one of your New Zealand stay at the same rates as residents. Make sure to check the Inland Revenue website for full details on your tax obligations. Choosing the Right Visa Your primary reason for visiting determines your visa type. If you’re coming for specific business purposes or events, you may need a Specific Purpose Work Visa or a Business Visitor Visa instead. For employers, it’s important to check a migrant’s visa conditions through VisaView to ensure compliance. You can find more about these new conditions here.
